2010: TIPPING POINT: CONFERENCE ON ART AND CLIMATE CHANGE

CAPE TOWN – 24th to 26th MAY 2010
Taking place over 3 days this gathering brought together TippingPoint, The Fynbos Foundation, The Ford Foundation and key supporter, the British Council. This first South African conference is a residential event which took place at the Spier Conference Centre in Stellenbosch. Artists from all art forms and key scientists gathered to explore the challenge of climate change and the consequences for Africa.

Appreciation of the cultural implications and exploration of the role that artists play in understanding, interpreting, communicating and investigating subjects is of critical importance. The conference sought to harness the responsibility and will of the wider cultural sector to explore and make informed commitments to mitigate the current effects of climate change.

2009: SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE

The Fynbos Foundation's scholarship initiative is aimed at providing young, aspiring journalists with an opportunity to further their studies in the field of journalism. Scholarship recipients, also known as Fynbos Fellows, together with their mentors will select appropriate courses, programs or degrees that they feel will best benefit their career. To date, two passionate, young recipients have received scholarships, details of which can be found below:

Buhle Hlatshwayo

Buhle Hlatshwayo: Media24

Buhle, the youngest of 4 siblings, is a passionate and hardworking young journalist who credits her ambition to her modest upbringing and close knit family. As a young student Buhle loved to read and write, and as such is determined to succeed as a journalist.

After graduating from the University of Johannesburg in 2008, where she also majored in psychology, Buhle immediately began working at Media24, and is currently working at City Press, a division of Media24. She is yet to be published, but anxiously looks forward to her first opportunity.

Inga Strydom

Inga Strydom: Cape Community Newspapers

Inga completed her internship at the Cape Times Newspaper in 2001, after which she acquired two journalism diplomas (cum laude) and is now working for Cape Community Newspapers (CCN) where she has been since 2004. She is an ardent writer who enjoys the creativity and imaginative nature of journalism. Inga loves nature, the outdoors and the environment; a common focal point of CCN and has written a number of important articles regarding significant environmental issues.

In her spare time she enjoys yoga, swimming, body boarding and is a keen reader. Inga has used the proceeds of the Fynbos Fellows bursary to complete a number of journalism courses and is actively looking for programs that will add value to her career.
